When to start introducing solid foods


Start around 5~6 months, depending on the baby's situation.


Signs your baby is ready for solid foods

  • Able to sit with neck sitting and support.

  • They began to stare at adults eating.

  • Less push out the spoon with the tongue when it is placed in the mouth.


When is the best time of day to wean?

  • One weaning a day, with timing of feedings. 

  • The recommended time for weaning is in the morning on weekdays when medical facilities are available.


How to progress from one to two meals.

Around one month after starting one meal of weaning, you can start to eat two meals.

Formats and quantities are stepped up around 7 months depending on how the baby is doing

The best time to try new foods is in the morning.


Foodstuffs to watch out for.

Honey, honey-based foods (e.g. confectionery) corn syrup, vegetables that have been insufficiently washed and peeled. Vegetable juices, etc. are not used until the child is one year old to prevent infant botulism.


Foods to Avoid for Babies Under One Year Old.

  • Honey

  • Cow’s milk


After 7 months, it can only be used for cooking, but as a beverage, it should be given only after 1 year of age.


  • Raw foods

  • Octopus, squid

  • Processed fish products (hanpen, chikuwa, kamaboko)


  • Buckwheat noodles (soba)

  • Nuts

  • Konjac


Small foods that can easily cause choking, such as cherry tomatoes and grapes, should be thinly sliced.


Food allergies.

There is no need to delay weaning or remove foods to prevent food allergies.

The standard time and content of foods should be used when weaning is started.

If you are concerned, for example because of a family history of strong allergies,

it is recommended to consult a doctor.


In Japan, babies start their weaning diet with rice porridge.

Powdered rice porridge is easy to handle as it turns into porridge simply by adding hot water.

You can purchase baby food at supermarkets, pharmacies, and stores that sell baby products.
